The Andaman Sea is home to a variety of marine life, but unfortunately some of them are facing the risk of extinction. Some of the endangered marine life in the Andaman Sea include various fish, sharks, rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and more.
One of the most endangered species found in the Andaman Sea is the whale shark, listed as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and are known to migrate to the Andaman Sea to feed on plankton. These gentle giants are often targeted by fishermen for their meat, fins and oil, which has led to a significant decline in the whale shark population.
Sea turtles remain critically endangered in the Andaman Sea, with all species found in the region listed as “endangered” or “critically endangered” by the IUCN. Sea turtles face a number of threats, including poaching for their eggs, meat and shells, as well as loss of nesting and food sources. They are also often caught as prey in fishing gear.
